2012 In Review
The Jakeland Fire Dept. responded to 32,316 runs in 2012. There were 298 working fires. Of the 298, 87 were working structure fires. 63 were held to a first alarm or less assignment. 11 went to a 2nd Alarm assignment. 10 were 3rd Alarms. 2 were 4th Alarms and 1 5th Alarm.
The busiest Engine was Engine 9 with 3,003 runs.
The busiest Ladder was Tower Ladder 1 with 2,501 runs.
And in 2012, 20 firefighters were injured on duty.

January 14
Firefighters fought this stubborn kitchen fire at the Cowboy Up! Steakhouse. A second alarm was needed to the scene as the fire flashed over and extended up into a second floor apartment. Firefighters however were able to keep the fire from spreading to any other structures. No one was hurt at this 2 alarm job.
March 12
Truck 2 was requested to stand by in Lego Twp during a horrific fire on Mayport Lane in Lego Twp. Five occupants in the home at 17 Mayport Lane perished. This fire was the worst fire with loss of life in the history of Lego Twp.
March 25
Engine 4 accepted delivery of a 2012 American La France Metropolitan rescue style engine.
April 4
Both the Jakeland Fire Dept. and Rochelle Heights Fire Dept. received a call reporting a house fire near the border of both municipalities. The fire was discovered at 640 Forest Place in Jakeland. Firefighters from Jakeland were assisted by Rochelle Heights Truck 832 and Engine 831. The fire was held to a second alarm and no other structures were involved due to the acts of both departments.
April 5
Ladder 7 accepted delivery of a 2012 Seagrave equipped with a 100' rear mounted ladder.
April 22
At the intersection of South Main St and Industrial Ave, a serious motor vehicle crash occurred entrapping one person in a SUV. Firefighters from Rescue 1, Engine 13 and Squad 3 were able to extricate the occupant of the SUV in just under 20 minutes.
April 23
The officers and firefighters from Engine Co. 13 unveiled their new company patch.
April 23
The Mayor and City Council of Jakeland, along with Chief McNulty, announced that the largest order for new fire apparatus was placed with Seagrave. The order consisted of 3 new engines, 2 new aerialscopes, 1 new tractor drawn aerial and 1 new rescue.
May 5
With the arrival of a brand new aerialscope tower ladder for Truck 1, Chief McNulty officially re-designated Truck 1 to Tower Ladder 1. With this new designation, Tower Ladder 1 unveiled a brand new patch.
May 6
Engine 1 placed in service their brand new 2012 Seagrave engine. Tower Ladder 1 placed in service their brand new 2012 Seagrave equipped with a 95' Aerialscope tower ladder.
May 7
The Oritani Federal Credit Union Building burned bringing in every fire unit from Jakeland. Mutual aid from Lego Twp, Buena Vista, St Lego, South Palm, Rochelle Heights, New Brickington, Midlego, River County, Portage and North Lereado County assisted Jakeland at the scene and stood by in empty firehouses. This was the biggest fire since the Jakeland Clipper Public House fire on 4/6/11. This would also be the biggest fire in 2012.
July 9
The Lego Twp Fire Dept. held a 10th Anniversary parade on July 9. The Jakeland Fire Dept. took home 5 awards from the parade. Engine 1 won second place for "Best Appearing Pumper up to 5 years old", Squad 3 won Honorable Mention for "Best Appearing Squad", Tower Ladder 1 took home first place for "Best Appearing Aerial up to 5 years old", Ladder 7 won second place in the same category, and Rescue 1 took home first place for "Best Appearing Rescue up to 5 years old".
July 17
Two fires occurred in Jakeland on July 17. The first occurred on Central Ave which required 3 alarms to the scene. One woman who was trapped inside was rescued by members of Rescue 1.
As the Central Ave fire was ongoing, a second fire occurred on Burnside Ave. Due to most of Jakelands Bravest operating at the Central Ave job, firefighters from Rochelle Heights, Lego Twp and St Lego were requested to the scene to battle the blaze.
With the exception of Hurricane Sandy, this was the busiest day for Jakelands Bravest in 2012.

August 1
A car fire occurred on the Eric S. McDonald Expressway (State Route 1). This normally isn't news worthy in Jakeland, however it turned out to be the last run that the busiest engine in the history of the JLFD responded to as Engine 9. With the new Seagrave engine arriving, the 2005 Pierce Engine was set to be replaced and reassigned. As Engine 9, this engine operated at more fires than any other unit in the history of the Jakeland Fire Dept.
August 5
Engine 9 placed in service a brand new 2012 Seagrave engine.
September 20
At 300 Commerce Way in Midtown Jakeland, a fire in a strip mall raged out of control. A second alarm was needed to the scene to battle the flames. No one was injured at this fire.
October 29
Hurricane Sandy struck the City of Jakeland hard. A "perfect storm" of consequences made a usually bad situation even worse. Due to high tide and the full moon at the time of Hurricane Sandys strike on Jakeland, portions of Jakeland that are on the river were flooded. The huge gusts of wind blew down trees, telephone poles and even structures. Even after the storm had passed, Jakelands Bravest had to deal with gas leaks, structure fires, and multiple people trapped in structures and vehicles. Jakelands Bravest for a week after the storm were operating at full capacity and mutual aid was needed to assist. There was thankfully only one fatality in Jakeland due to Hurricane Sandy.
November 12
Ladder 3 placed in service a brand new 2012 Seagrave tractor drawn aerial equipped with a 100' ladder.
November 16
On the 29th Birthday of the Jakeland Fire Dept., an explosion with fire occurred on Martin Terrace. Firefighters fought all through the early morning hours battling the blaze that consumed 2 homes and burned to 3 alarms. Five people were killed due to the explosion.
December 10
Members of Engine 2 and Ladder 7 rescued a man trapped from a house fire on College Way. The fire was held at 2 Alarms.
