DECEMBER 9
ALL HANDS ON OAK ST
Firefighters were dispatched to 47 Oak Street on a report of a working house fire at 2:57 AM. When Engine 9 arrived on scene, they found heavy fire venting from the first floor on the "Bravo Side" of the home. This caused an exposure problem and a threat of the blaze spreading to 45 Oak Street. An inch and three quarter attack line was deployed by Engine 9 to the first floor to attack the blaze. Tower Ladder 4 arrived on scene shortly after and began a search of the home. Once Engine 7 arrived, they stretched a hose in between the two homes to protect 45 Oak Street. Firefighters were able to quickly douse the blaze however and prevent the fire from spreading. As firefighters began opening up the walls and ceilings on the first floor, it was discovered that the fire had extended up to the second floor. Crews were able to quickly douse the blaze however to prevent any further damage. The fire was held to an All Hands assignment bringing in Engines 9, 7, 12, 6, Tower Ladders 4, 2, Squad 3, Rescue 1, Battalion 2 and Deputy 4. The cause of tjhe fire has been determined to be a space heater on the first floor. No one was injured at this incident.
OCTOBER 30-31
MISCHIEF NIGHT 2017
Jakeland's Bravest were kept busy, as usual, on Mischief Night. However, this year was much more violent than other years. Three JLFD Firefighters and two JLPD Police Officers were injured at multiple incidents across the city. At 9:07 PM, Engine 7 was responding to a car fire on Central Ave. While responding, someone threw an object at Engine 7 which struck the windshield and caused damage. Engine 7 was able to stay in service after being inspected at the DPW garage. No members of Engine 7 were injured.
Later in the evening at 12:23 AM, Engine 5 was dispatched to the 300 block of Downtown Blvd for a smell of gas. While operating at the scene, a group of vandals assaulted the chauffeur of Engine 5, FF Gregory James. The vandals used an unknown object to knock FF James unconscious. After the assault, the vandals threw a molotov cocktail into the cab of Engine 5 causing the engine to burst into flames. Engine 4, which was also operating at the scene down the block, quickly responded to aid Engine 5 and extinguish the blaze. The vandals fled the scene prior to the arrival of JLPD officers.
At 1:25 AM at 34 Maple Ave, two more JLFD Firefighters were injured. Engine 13 was dispatched to the five story apartment building for a report of smoke on the third floor. As Firefighters were entering the front entrance, objects thrown at them from the roof struck two Firefighters causing non life threatening injuries to them both. Those responsible for the attack fled the roof and into an unknown apartment prior to police officers finding them.
All three firemen were treated at Jakeland University Medical Center and released. Engine 5 was a total loss. The JLPD is investigating both incidents to bring those responsible to justice.
The pictured incidents below is Engine 5 and Ladder 3 operating at the "Old City Hall Building" on City Hall Ave for a pile of debris burning on the steps. This fire was started by unknown vandals attempting to damage the building. The next incident is Engine 5 burning on Downtown Blvd. Engine 4 is pictured extinguishing the blaze. The last picture is of Engine 7's windshield damaged.

TENAFLY DR FATAL HOUSE FIRE
At 1:48 PM, Jakeland's Bravest were sent to 46 Tenafly Rd for a working house fire. At 1:51 PM, Engine 7 and Tower Ladder 4
arrived. Upon arrival, a resident in the area reported that someone
was possibly trapped on the second floor of the 2 family home.
Tower Ladder 4 immediately began a search on the second floor,
while Engine 7 stretched an attack hose and began dousing the
flames on the first floor. Flames quickly spread up the walls of the
house to the second floor and the attic. Before firefighters were able
to complete the primary search on the second floor, they were
forced to back down to the first floor. A second line was stretched by
Engine 9 to the second floor. A second alarm was then requested to the scene as conditions quickly deteriorated. Tower Ladder 2's crew
headed up to the roof and began to vent. Firefighters were able to
knock down the bulk of the fire quickly after ventilation was
complete. Engine 9 was then able to advance up to the second floor
again and knock down the bulk of the fire. After all visible fire was
knocked on the first and second floors, firefighters then made their way up into the attic to knock down the rest of the flames.
Firefighters were then able to completely search the second floor.
They located the occupant in the bathroom in a tub. Due to this fire
involving a fatality, the County Prosecutor's Office Arson Unit
responded to the scene to investigate the cause. It would be determined that a faulty electrical power strip on the
first floor caused the blaze. They also discovered the home had no smoke detectors. Unfortunately, the elderly male
who lived on the second floor could not escape the fast moving flames. The incident was held to a 2nd Alarm
assignment. All units that operated were Engines 7, 9, 12, 6, 13, 1, Tower Ladders 4, 2, 1, Squad 3, Rescue 1,
Battalion 2 and Deputy 3. The Jakeland PD and Jakeland University Medical Center EMS assisted at the scene.

DELI AND BAKERY BURN ON BOSTON BLVD TO 4 ALARMS
At 1:28 PM, Jakelands Bravest were dispatched to
620 Boston Blvd, the "Boardwalk Subs", for a report of a working kitchen fire. When Engine 15 and Squad 10 arrived on scene, they discovered heavy smoke venting from the delis first and second floor windows.Flames were also visible on both floors. Deputy Chief Madsen, upon arrival, requested a 2nd Alarm to the scene. Firefighters then discovered smoke venting from 622 Boston Blvd, "Nana's Bakery". While Engine 15 stretched a hose into the deli to combat the blaze,Engine 2's crew stretched a second line off Engine 15 into the bakery. In the deli, conditions continued to deteriorate rapidly. Firefighters from Engine 4 then
stretched a line off of their engine to assist Engine
15. Crews inside the bakery reported the same. A
3rd Alarm was then requested to the scene.
Flames had made their way up the walls into the attic space of the bakery. Firefighters had a difficult time attacking the seat of the fire. As the flames continued to rage, firefighters were ordered out of the buildings and fight the flames defensively. Due to the excessive heat, a 4th Alarm was requested to the scene to swap out manpower. No one was hurt or killed at this job. The fire was held to the deli and bakery. 624 Boston Blvd and 112 Russell Casse Ave suffered minor heat and smoke damage. All Jakeland FD units operated at the scene. Mutual aid from Lego Twp, North Lereado County, Riverwoods, Westbrick, Rochelle Heights, Lego Regional Fire Authority, Portage County, Buena Vista, Jackson and St Lego stood by in empty firehouses across the city. ALL HANDS MOTHERS DAY HOUSE FIRE ON GROVE
At 12:07 AM, Jakelands Bravest were dispatched to 141 Grove St for a reported house fire. When Squad 3 first arrived, they were met by the residents of the downstairs apartment of the two family house. They reported that they did not know where the upstairs residents were and they could still be inside. Squad 3 quickly split its 6 man crew. Squads normally operate as a FAST team at jobs. Due to Squad 3 being first due, they began operating as a first due ladder. Three members went up to the second floor apartment and began a primary search. Two other members then went up to the roof to begin ventilation. Engine 13 was able to secure a water supply and stretched one hose to the first floor. When Engine 9 arrived, they stretched a second hose to the second floor. Flames quickly extended up the rear walls of the home to the second floor. Tower Ladder 2 was assigned as the FAST truck as Tower Ladder 4 assisted with venting the building and securing the utilities. Rescue 1 made a primary search on the first floor and assisted with fire suppression. At 12:48 AM, the fire was declared under control. All primary and secondary searches were negative. The J.L.P.D. was able to make contact with the second floor residents, who were away for Mothers Day weekend. The cause of the blaze appears to be an oven fire. The downstairs residents reported they were letting the oven clean when they went up to bed. All units that operated at the scene were Engines 13, 9, 7, 6, Tower Ladders 2, 4, Squad 3, Rescue 1, Battalion 2 and Deputy 3.

GENERAL ALARM NJU JOSHUA CHAMBERS ADMINISTRATION BUILDING FIRE
At 12:38 PM the Jakeland FD Dispatch center received a call reporting smoke coming from the Joshua Chambers Administrative Building on the NJU Campus. At 12:40 they received a call from the alarm company reporting a fire alarm activated on the basement floor of the building. When Engine 12 arrived on scene at 12:43, they observed light smoke venting from the front of the building. Members of Engine 12 stretched a hose into the building and set up a water supply. Engine 9 arrived soon after and helped stretching a second hose into the building and established a second water supply. Crews had a difficult time getting water on the seat of the fire in the basement and on the first floor. Engine 7's crew established a third water supply and stretched a line off of their engine to the rear of the building through the rear stairwell. As crews attempted to douse the blaze, flames made their way into the walls of the building and quickly extended up to the second floor. Conditions then quickly deteriorated and firefighters were forced to evacuate. Flames eventually raged through the roof of the building and caused a partial collapse of the first floor into the basement. A General Alarm was requested at 2:20 PM to bring fresh crews to the scene. Mutual aid was also requested to stand by in empty firehouses across the city while members operated at the scene. Mutual Aid was provided by Rochelle Heights, North Lereado County, Lego Twp, Portage County, Westbrick, Jackson, St Lego and Riverwoods. No one was injured at this incident. The cause of the fire appears to be a faulty electrical box in the basement of the building.
